1930s Day on the Lake

Graham R Preston: Employee of Bradford College since March 2001. During my time at the college working within the school of Arts and Media, I have supported students on the BA Textile Design & HNC in Constructed Textiles, now Contempory Surface within my specialist area’s woven and knitted fabric in contempory designs for both furnishings and fashion apparel. Because most of my work was done to meet both the demands of my students and deadlines, it left very little time for experimentation, which I found very frustrating, as I am very keen to explore new and innovative techniques. Starting the BA in Art & Design course in 2008 and completing in 2010 was an excellent way of fulfilling these needs. The general theme of my work is a development from my studies over the two years in which I explored ‘Art Deco’ style of the 1920s and 30s, focusing on the ‘geometric’ ness’ and its transformation into drawings as a basis for future textile design. My visual inspiration comes from the textile process and mechanism’s (machine)and additionally from my life experience of working within textile manufacture and subsequently draws on my technical expertise in the use of technology in design.
